Kitayama

I've had many pleasant memories at Kitayama, from a lovely birthday dinner to taking my out of town gal pal here. Last week was no different. My dad took me to this Japanese restaurant in Newport Beach after work for some quality father-daughter time.

I love the beautiful Japanese garden, friendly service from the kimono-dressed waitresses, and exquisite decor inside.

My dad ordered this beautiful presented sashimi dinner. The salmon I stole from his plate was fresh and tasty.



I ordered some rolls and my favorite was the Three Kings Roll. This unique roll had tuna and avocado on top and was filled with crab meat and shrimp inside but topped with a spicy pepper sauce. It was absolutely yummy and I'm sure I'll be coming back for more.

    My mom goes to this place with her friends, and says that this place is good for cold food like raw fish and shellfish. If you like hot food I would suggest, in addition to kappo honda, kappo sui and echizen.

    If you go to either sui or echizen and don't have anyone there to read the menu (no English), have them tell you what seasonal specials they have and order off that.

Fire Safety Tips

It’s been about a month since my family and I survived a house fire. It's been a roller coaster of ups and downs. I feel optimistic and very thankful to survive and recover from my injuries. Racist Episodes

Upon reflecting on racism in my life, a few key episodes stick out in my mind. Denmark - My first encounter with racists was in high school when I stayed with a home stay family. They made me feel unwelcome for being an Asian American and kept saying they wish they got an American student, but in my mind I was an American study. They kept inquiring where was I from & I said I’m from California. I complained to the group chaperone and was quickly switched to a more welcoming home stay family and able to have a better experience. Denver - I was on a date with my boyfriend/now husband waiting for our table at a restaurant. I noticed subtle racist Behavior when a white couple who came in after us was seated first. I brought it up to my boyfriend and he says don’t worry about it and we’ll get seated first. This restaurant is first come, first serve.
