Fashon profile: Karen Cayetano

Editor note: I met Gail from Cayetano Legacy at a Filipino Chamber of Commerce event recently. I had the chance to interview her sister, Karen, who heads up design of Cayetano Legacy. It's always great to know fellow Filipina entrepreneurs.

Tell me about yourself.
I've always wanted to be in fashion, so after graduating college (Seton Hall University with a Management Information Systems degree) I immediately started applying for jobs in NYC at larger fashion brands.  I was lucky enough to work with some great teams at various companies such as Tommy Hilfiger, Children's Place, etc.  At the same time, I've always created my own jewelry.  When my two sisters and I brought up the idea of going into business together, it was right around a family trip to the Philippines.  On that trip we saw these beautiful, vibrant stones sourced there in the PI, and we met these inspiring women artisans who were hand crafting bold necklaces using these stones and various material.  I immediately knew this style of jewelry could be a hit internationally, so I started working closely with them to create styles in this same vain that would work well for the rest of the world.  And now here we are, sold in larger retailers such as Bloomingdale's and Zappos.com, as well as in 100+ boutiques across the country since we started our business almost three years ago.   It's been a whirlwind but all totally worth it!  We're grateful everyday for the opportunities that have come our way.

Do you have any advice for fellow women entrepreneurs?
Oh gosh, YES.  As women we feel the pressure to do it all!  I'm a mom, a wife, a sister, a daughter AND a business woman.  It's hard to balance it all; it's not easy.  So my piece of advice to all the women out there is to not feel guilty with the thought of coming up short in any of your commitments.  There's no physical way to 'do it all' so as long as you can set your priorities and do the best you can, then everything will turn out alright.

Any future plans you can reveal?
Well..... I can say we have a whole new line of products debuting this summer that aren't just within the 'jewelry' category :)  The best place to stay up-to-date on this reveal is by checking cayetanolegacy.com and our Facebook page Facebook.com/CayetanoLegacy.  We're anxious to show off what we've been working so hard on!

Don't forget to check out their upcoming trunk shows at Bloomingdale's.
